Buying Property in Portugal: Is a Corporate Structure Right for You?

· Updated September 2026 · Pedro Tabuada, Lawyer

For international investors, purchasing property in the Algarve through a corporate structure—whether a Portuguese "Lda" or an entity in another jurisdiction—is a strategic discussion. In 2026, it is no longer just about privacy; it is about long-term asset management.

Why consider Corporate Ownership?

Succession Planning: It can simplify the transfer of assets between generations, avoiding some of the complexities of individual probate.

Asset Protection: Keeping your Portuguese real estate separate from your personal global estate.

Tax Management: For certain types of investment, a company structure can offer better efficiency for rental income and expenses.

The Reality Check: Corporate ownership is not a "magic bullet." With beneficial-ownership reporting (RCBE) and the Additional IMI (AIMI, 0.4% for companies, without the €600k allowance individuals have), the costs of maintaining a company must be weighed against its benefits. What worked for a buyer in 2015 might not be the most efficient path today.

Before you decide on the ownership structure, ensure you have an independent legal audit of your specific case.
